The Spanish movement Indignados or Movimiento 15M, often associated with the occupy movement, began on 15 May 2011 when protesters occupied squares and made demands for a Real Democracy Now (Democracia Real Ya). A few month laters, in September of 2011, one of the first occupy protests in the United States was started in New York, with Occupy Wall Street. These protests were denouncing social and economic inequalities as well as the disproportionate power of financial actors and corporations, with the use of the slogan We are the 99% - a reference to the concentration of power and wealth being held by just 1% of the population. Occupy protests have since appeared in countries all over the world.
